[addtoany]With a 16-25 mm range1 that is ideal for scenery, cityscapes, selfies, travel, and general snapshots, this versatile wide-angle zoom delivers beautiful G Lens rendering and bokeh at all focal lengths in a remarkably compact, lightweight design. You get refined large-aperture wide-angle imaging performance for both stills and movies.
An advanced optical design using three ED (Extra low Dispersion) glass elements plus four aspherical elements that include one ED Aspherical glass element delivers high resolution throughout the 16-25 mm zoom range in a remarkably compact lens. Flare, ghosting, and color bleeding are effectively subdued for clear, detailed rendering.
Two specially optimized linear motors and a precision control system acquire focus on any subject with remarkable speed and accuracy. Tracking performance is excellent, easily keeping up with Sony’s advanced α9 III camera at up to 120 fps2. Precise, quiet focus is smoothly acquired and maintained even when shooting high frame rate 4K 120p or FHD 240p movies3.
Painstaking optical optimization has achieved excellent close-up performance at all focal lengths. Maximum magnification is 0.2x (AF)/0.23x (MF) with a minimum focus distance of 0.18 m (0.59ft) (AF)/0.17 m (0.56ft) (MF) at the 16 mm end of the range and 0.24 m (AF) (0.79ft)/0.22 m (0.73ft) (MF) at the 25 mm end of the range for superb wide-angle close-up performance. Wide-angle coverage lets you shoot close while simultaneously capturing the subject’s surroundings.
Even though it boasts an advanced optical design that includes four aspherical elements, one of which is ED Aspherical, this lens is only 74.8 mm in diameter by 91.4 mm in length (3 x 3-5/8 inch). Engineering plastics enhance durability while reducing weight to approximately 409 grams (14.5 oz), making this a low-stress F2.8 choice for long shooting sessions or low-light situations.
A maximum aperture that remains constant at F2.8 throughout the zoom range, state-of-the-art optical design, and an 11-blade circular aperture unit all work in harmony to deliver the smooth, deep bokeh that is a hallmark of Sony’s G Lens line-up. Exquisite bokeh brings subjects to the fore.
Wide angles, F2.8 in a compact, lightweight zoom that can be easily handheld, and quiet AF can be significant advantages for movies. Minimal zoom extension and center of gravity shift make gimbal or drone mounting easy too. And combined with in-body Active Mode stabilization3 it can deliver stable handheld footage at wide angles even while walking. It also supports body breathing compensation4 and metadata recording.
The deep, soft bokeh available with full-frame image sensors is further enhanced by a 11-blade circular aperture and optimally tuned spherical aberration. All of this supports the creation of impressive, memorable imagery.
Three ED (Extra low Dispersion) glass elements and four aspherical elements that include one ED Aspherical glass element ensure corner to corner high contrast and significantly reduce chromatic aberration for sharp reproduction without color bleeding.
For direct, intuitive creative control when shooting stills and movies, this lens features a full complement of three control rings: focus, zoom, and aperture. The aperture ring click stops can be turned ON to provide tactile feedback when shooting stills, or OFF for smooth, silent control when shooting movies.
In addition to three control rings the FE 16-25mm F2.8 G includes a customizable focus hold button and AF/MF switch. Linear Response MF ensures immediate, intuitive manual focus control. Inner focus makes it easy to use rotatable 67 mm filters, such as variable ND types that are often used when shooting movies.
The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants, while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants or fingerprints that do become attached to the lens surface.
An updated dust and moisture resistant design6 provides extra reliability for outdoor use in challenging conditions. Silicon seals around buttons and switches and a rubber gasket around the lens mount greatly reduce the likelihood of dust and moisture incursion.
The SEL2450G accepts standard 67 mm screw-on filters for expanded creative freedom – even with its F2.8 large aperture. Thanks to its internal focus system the filter ring does not rotate while focusing, facilitating the use of circular polarizing filters for landscape photography or variable ND filters for movies.
Petal shaped, bayonet mount lens hood ALC-SH178 is supplied, and also available separately as an optional accessory.
